 Corus Finale Weekend

Corus 2008

NED We could be in for a close and exciting finish at Corus Wijk aan Zee, after an epic encounter in round 11 between tournament leader Magnus Carlsen and world champion Vishy Anand blew the race for the title wide-open. Carlsen, who led the pack by a half point, opted to put his marker down for the future by going for an all-out assault on Anand's king in a game that many will remember for years to come.

Ad - New In Chess magazineTo his credit, Carlsen had no intention of looking for a draw against the world champion as he bravely launched what looked like a vicious attack. However, Anand is not if nothing a quick and accurate calculator in such sharp positions, and he easily saw through all the complications to hold the position. But youth knows no boundaries as Carlsen over-pressed his attack and Anand held onto the extra material to convert the full point - but not before pointing out to the young pretender for his crown in the post-mortem that, amidst all the complications, he missed a draw.

The game certainly entertained everyone listening in to the live coverage at ICC Chess.FM with Mig & GM Nick De Firmian - and it proved to be an easy Game of the Day pick for Nick, who analyzes all the lines and points out the missed draw that you can see by clicking here to watch the free 20 minute video. The result opened the door for Levon Aronian to jump into the top spot, after the Armenian beat Dutchman Loek Van Wely to take a half point lead over Anand, Carlsen and Teimour Radjabov

And look out for a special ICC Chess.FM live coverage of the final round at Corus, where joining GM Joel Benjamin in the commentary box on Sunday will be world #5 and four-time Russian champion GM Peter Svidler! This is a final weekend not to be missed on ICC - and remember to tune-in early as play starts an hour earlier on Sunday at 06:30am EST (12:30pm CET).

ICC's Macauley Peterson interviewed several players at Corus on their reactions to Fischer's death that will feature in his latest onsite video from Wijk aan Zee. See below collection of other Macauley videos from Wijk.

Also each round, one of our top grandmaster commentary team will be giving their spin on the best game of the round with Game of the Day. See below for full selection.

Bobby Fischer Rediscovered - Andy Soltis

Bobby Fischer Rediscovered - Andy Soltis

Although 30 years have passed since Bobby Fischer single-handedly wrested the world chess title from the former Soviet Union, admiration for his beautiful play remains as strong as ever. As copies of My 60 Memorable Games by Fischer are elusive and the book only covers material up to 1967 in any case, the author has provided a timely volume that retraces Bobby’s chess career from his teenage years in New York right up to his final matches with Boris Spassky, taking a fresh look at the chessboard masterpieces that have made him a living chess legend. Bobby Fischer I Knew and other Stories, The - Denker, Arnold and Parr, Larry

Bobby Fischer I Knew and other Stories, The - Denker, Arnold and Parr, Larry

This Damon Runyon-like work will be around well into the Twenty-first Century to inform future chess generations about such greats as Bobby Fischer and world champion Gary Kasparov as well as the "guys and dolls" of the New York chess scene during the fabled Golden Era of the 1930s and 1940s. In the Introduction, five-time U.S.

Champion Larry Evans writes that the authors capture "some of the most raucous and colorful figures in 20th Century chess" with a "Dickensian precision". Yet there is plenty of hard chess in this big book - over 300 games and positions, many never before published, and which contain interesting opening ideas that have either been forgotten or neglected in the manuals. Bobby Fischer: The Wandering King - Hans Bohm & Kees Jongkind

Bobby Fischer: The Wandering King - Hans Bohm & Kees Jongkind

Despite his idiosyncrasies, Fischer has become an intriguing living legend. This book traces his story through interviews with former friends and rivals of Fischer, including Seirawan and Karpov, and his former bodyguard and fitness trainer.

The authors have dug through the archives, including recently opened FBI files, in order to place the more negative aspects of the man into context – his tough upbringing, his exceptional talent, his anti-social behaviour, his fight against the chess authorities and his growing eccentricity. This book is a must for anyone interested in this remarkable man and his fascinating life. Read more
